About Us

United Kingdom
Couple of retirees who really enjoy travel - particularly roadtrips to the deserts and prairies. We suspect we must be nomads as characterised by Richard Grant as RV resident retiree nomads in his book "Ghost Riders"

Day 7 - Route66, Navajo, Apache, and Outlaws

Left Santa Fe and made our way south to Santa Rosa on the old Route 66. Called in for coffee and pie at Joe's Diner, a classic old-time diner that still looks original.
Continued south on US84 to Fort Sumner where we visited the Bosque Redondo Memorial http://www.nmmonuments.org/inst.php?inst=8 which commemorates the forced exile of The Navajo and Mescalero Apache people to a new reservation. Many lives lost both on the 400 mile walk and from subsequent hunger and disease This escapade painted Kit Carson in a very negative light.

Nearby we found the graveyard where Billy the Kid and a couple of his gang are buried. What is it about us and graveyards? On successive trips we have now visited the graves of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Elvis, Kit Carson and Billy the Kid. Worrying!!
We then continued South on the emptiest roads and grassland we have seen. Incredibly wide open spaces with no traffic and so sign of life - the type of country we both like.
We eventually finished up in Roswell for the night. Assuming we don't get abducted overnight we plan to visit the UFO museum tomorrow.
